Things To Consider When Looking For an Antique Emerald Ring

Posted by on 24 Sep 2010 | Tagged as: Advice, Antique Rings, Choosing a ring, Emerald Rings, Women's Jewelry

An emerald is a precious gem that is often associated with the goddess Venus.  Green is said to be the goddesses’ color.  This is the reason why emeralds are generally thought of as the gem of love and beauty.  Emeralds are also given during the 55th wedding anniversary; it is also the birthstone for the month of May.  The gem may be considered one of the most popular gems and also, one of the most expensive gems around.  This is the reason why a lot of jewelry websites would display emeralds among the ones in their top of the line collection.  The most expensive would normally be a solitaire setting in platinum – classic and timeless.

For some, the more appealing option would be to give a ring with a history associated with it.  For those with inkling for emeralds, they would normally go for an antique emerald ring.  For this, antique shops would be the best option.  There are websites that sell these types of rings but most of the time; it would be difficult to check on the authenticity of the ring.  Some rings would only be antique designed.  These rings would have designs that look like they are antiques but really, they’re not.  It would just be a reflection of good craftsmanship.

Antique rings would normally showcase filigree designs, Art Deco and Victorian.  These designs would be more extravagant as compared to the simple designs that can be found nowadays.  This would be what separates an antique ring from the modern ones that we are used to. For antique rings, the attention would be drawn to the center gem by the design of the setting, the setting would seldom have other gems, and it would be more of the carvings around the gem.

An antique emerald ring would be quite expensive as the gem itself gains value the more it gets old.  The more popular setting would be that of having a filigree design around the gem itself.  For these type of rings, the price would be dependent on the size of the emerald, how detailed the filigree is and the carat of the setting.  Most of the settings would be done in gold as platinum and white gold was not as popular back then.

If you are in the hunt for the perfect antique emerald ring, you can go through the local antique shop or when doing your search via the web, do not look for the ring itself, better to look for the antique shops around your area and make that phone call to check with the shop owners if they have what you want.  This would always be the better option.
