When buying a men’s ring there are several metals to choose from that are the common metals for men’s rings today. In this post we are going to list out the most common metals and the pros and cons for each metal.

Gold

Pros: Gold is the most common metal used in rings. It is the most affordable metal out of all them provided that there are no diamonds or stones on the ring. The most common versions of these rings come in 10-karat, 14-karat, and 18-karat versions. Gold can be polished to a bright shine and is available in several colors including yellow, white, and gold.

Cons: Gold is not as durable as some of the other metals and can scratch easier. Also there are some people who tend to be allergic to gold.

Platinum

Pros: Platinum is the most valuable of all the precious metals. It is white in color and makes for a very attractive ring specially for men’s wedding bands. It is a pure metal and is usually hypoallergenic.

Cons: Platinum scratches very easily. Out of all the precious metals, platinum is the most expensive one to make mens rings with.

Sterling Silver

Pros: Silver is the most beautiful and most reflective metal out of all the metals for men’s rings. If buying a silver ring make sure that it is sterling silver since it is 92.5 percent pure silver.

Cons: Silver tarnishes, so it requires more maintenance than other metals.

Titanium

Titanium ring

Pros: Titanium is a very durable metal and although it is very durable it is the lightest metal of all the metals. It is usually gray in color. A titanium ring doesn’t tarnish and discolor as easy. It is becoming very popular in mens rings these days. It is also hypoallergenic.

Cons: Being that titanium is an industrial metal it does not have the prestige as the other precious metals do, but that is changing. It also is the less resilient metal out of all the metals.

Tungsten

Tungsten Ring

Pros: Tungsten is a very tough metal. One can even go as far as to say it is the toughest metal out of all of the metals. This type of ring will last a lifetime and it’s also hypoallergenic.

Cons:Tungsten is one of the heavier metals from all of the industrial metals. It’s gray color may not be pleasing to the eye. It may crack if struck at high impact.

Ceramic

Ceramic ring

Pros: Ceramic rings have a glossy finish to them and a beautiful color. They usually don’t fade overtime. The material is lightweight and scratch resistant.

Cons: Ceramic rings usually don’t have the prestige and popularity as rings made of the other precious metals. They will crack if struck at high impact even though the material is hard and durable.

Steel

Steel Ring

Pros: Steel gives a ring a very nice shiny look especially if the steel is stainless steel. It is very affordable. It is very durable.  Steel is hypoallergenic and comfortable to wear.

Cons: Steel is not as popular as the other precious metals. It also tends to scratch very easily.
