Knowing ring terminonology whether it’s buying an engagement ring and wedding band for your future wife or if you are buying a wedding band or a fashion ring for yourself is very important when it comes to making a wise and financially safe decision. Most regular men’s rings have a plain finish, but men’s wedding bands can come in several different styles and finishes.   Here is the ring terminology that describes these types of mens rings as well as a chart which you can download to help you determine the ring size you are looking for.

Comfort Fit: A comfort fit band has a contoured inner surface. Because of this, less of the ring touches the skin. This design usually slides much easier on the finger and it’s more comfortable than a flat band. This fit is a good design especially for men who are not used to wearing a ring. However, due to the fact that comfort fit bands are about 1/2 size larger than traditional rings, it is usually better to get the next smaller ring size if you want a better fit.

Half Round: This fit is one of the most tradional fits for men’s wedding bands. It is half-round and comes with a curved exterior.

Pipe: The pipe band design is one that comes with flat surfaces and straight edges. The ring resembles the cross section of a cut round pipe. This design is very popular for those want a wide wedding band.

Finish: The finish is the last step to prepare the surface of a ring or any other metal jewelry. The most common finish in men’s rings, is a polished finish because it gives off a nice light-reflecting shine.

Matte: A matte finish is usually performed on gray metals. It is usually not reflective but it can give off a subtle shimmer that is quite attractive. This finish is performed by using a chemical abrasion, tumble polishing, or by hand rubbing an abrasive on the surface. The bad side of this finish is that scratches tend to show much easier than other finishes.

Brushed: This finish comes with a matte finish but with a slight texture of fine lines on the surface. This finish is sometimes referred to as a satin finish as well.

Millegrain: This texture contains small metal beads which cause the fine lines of a ring or any other type of jewelry to be accentuated. Sometimes the tiny beads hold small gemstones in place. On a mens wedding band, this finish is performed to decorate the edges of the ring.
