Deep Red Ruby Rings in Gold Settings

The best ruby rings are those that are deep red and set in yellow gold. The best rubies are pigeons blood and come from Burma (Myanmar) and are not cheap. The cheapest genuine ruby rings are those that have a treated or enhanced gem. Yes, rubies can be treated with heat oil, resins, wax and even color to be richer and darker and more lustrous looking.
These are inexpensive, lower quality rubies, but they look good to the naked eye and can be very affordable, especially for promise rings and simple eternity bands.
Why Choose a Yellow Gold Setting for Your Ruby Ring?
It’s tempting to pair a cheap ruby with a silver mounting and have an affordable gemstone ring, but if you want to really bring out the richest tones in a good quality ruby gemstone, then stick with yellow gold, even gold plating or vermeil is better than a white metal. Why?
Because a deep red or pigeons blood ruby will have a slight blue undertone making the gem almost purple when inspecting free of a setting. The best ruby color is true red, but to achieve that you need a slightly purple ruby, then when set in yellow, the blue tone of the purple is somewhat absorbed creating the illusion of the deepest truest red you can get. Even cheap enhanced stones will look better in yellow gold.
How much do Real Ruby Rings Cost?
That’s a little difficult to answer because like all gemstones it will depend on the clarity and color and size of the gem, and then it will also depend on the metal setting chosen. Cheap ruby rings are about $150, better ones are $200. For $300 you have something you could even use as a ruby engagement ring and for $400 to $600 you are starting to get something in richer tones and better designs.
You can get antique ruby rings from $150 to $300 that are simple and elaborate creations with diamonds and seed pearls for over $300 to several thousand. The price of a ruby is based mostly on color, if it has been treated or enhanced and how translucent it is.
You won’t get the best natural Burmese rubies in a gold setting for under several hundred dollars and that would be a small gem. If you want a high quality ruby ring from Burma or Vietnam, where the best ones are mined, then count of $1,000 to $3,000. Rubies are not cheap gems if they are good ones.
