Ask the ordinary human being about diamond hearts and they’ll most likely reply, ‘You mean like in Titanic?’. It’s amazing how much popular culture has influenced the average perception of jewels. The diamond heart necklace has been in fashion for a long time.

Since the early 1900’s when Arlene Francis, the popular TV personality, wore her diamond heart-shaped necklace on shows and started the fad, diamond hearts have been growing in fame and recognition. The diamond itself, long an item that jewelry was fashioned around, received a boost with Marilyn Monroe’s hit, ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’.

Other well-known instances in which the diamond heart played pivotal parts is when Elizabeth Montgomery wore a sparkling necklace for her role as Samantha in the show ‘Bewitched’. It gave weight to the show’s love themes, a symbol of love’s prevailing strength.

Of course, more recently, in the Titanic, as I have said above. It’s the best romantic film ever portrayed in cinemas. The famous blue heart diamond that brings such poignancy to the film is the ‘Heart of the Ocean’. This fictional necklace owes its conception to the Hope Diamond. That famous unlucky gem on which the Heart is based was never on the Titanic, though. Some say the story is also based on the story of Titanic survivor Kate Phillips, whose lover gave her a sapphire necklace on the ship.

Famous heart-shaped diamond necklaces are not all fictional, however. I can readily say that the most famous of these is the ‘Blue Heart’ diamond. It’s also known as the ‘Unzue’ diamond, for the woman who held it for four decades, or the ‘Eugenie Blue’, despite having no connection to French royalty. The unusual deep blue color of this gem is quite mesmerizing. It was set in a necklace pendant in the early fifties and is now, after having changed hands a few times, exhibited at the Smithsonian as a ring.

Talking about eye-catching, the ‘Gruosi Diamond’ is exquisite as well. The black diamond heart brings a James Bond-like thrill to the romantic atmosphere, don’t you think? This large black diamond is set in a white gold necklace among smaller black diamonds, white diamonds and garnets. It looks quite powerful in that setting and sounds absolutely terrifying to wear. It took three years to cut the rough diamond into that famous heart shape, and is currently in the collection of Fawaz Gruosi, the jeweler who started the black diamond craze.

There are many other heart diamonds in the world, like the ‘Heart of Eternity’ and the ‘Centenary’, though they haven’t been set in necklaces. Why do people go to the trouble of cutting diamonds, one of the hardest materials on the planet into this particular shape? Of course, diamonds have to look good, but they’re also repositories of passion and energy.

Diamonds are supposed to improve relationships, more so in a heart necklace, so I suppose there is justification for them being one of the most bought anniversary and romantic presents. If you want to really bring that message of love across, try out a diamond heart necklace.
