An island in Japan was famous for their pearl cultivating livelihood. One of those who cultivate pearls is a young man named Sano. He was a hardworking person who lived honestly. One day, while he was harvesting his cultivated pearls, he was astounded to find a black pearl.

It came from the small deformed oyster, which he thought was dead. He got the rare black pearl and hid it in his house, waiting for the deformed oyster to produce another one. True enough, every harvest time, Sano would always find the same black pearl in the deformed oyster. After collecting so many rare black pearls, it came to a point when suddenly the little deformed oyster really died.

Sano became sad and so in memory of that little oyster, he had thought of making something nice with the black pearls. And so, the young man made a black pearl necklace out of the black pearls he had gathered. Amazed by his masterpiece, Sano decided to give the black pearl necklace only to the person whom he is going to marry someday.

Time went by and Sano became rich because of his hard work in pearl cultivation. But aside from that, the young man thought that the black pearl necklace, which he had kept hidden, also brought good luck to him. Finally, it came to a time when Sano wanted to have a family. He started looking for a bride.

He promised to himself that as a proposal, he would give the black pearl necklace in place of a ring. He so wanted to have a wife already but every time he presents the black pearl necklace to a girl, the sparkle which he sees in the black pearl necklace dies. It is like the black pearl necklace suddenly became like black stone rocks formed into a necklace.

Of course, the girl with whom Sano presented the black pearl necklace becomes sad and after a few days, they would eventually break up. Sano then noticed that every time a girl would hold the black pearl necklace, the sparkle would just suddenly be gone. The young man started regretting his decision to make the black pearl necklace as the engagement ring, and also he started doubting if the black pearl necklace really brings luck.

After his tenth engagement proposal to a bride-to-be, Sano had decided that he will use the black pearl necklace one last time as an engagement ring and if it will still make his bride-to-be sad, he would never use the black pearl necklace anymore. A day after the tenth proposal, Sano remembered that he forgot to place back the black pearl necklace in its box. He had left it in the table at the patio.

When he went back to retrieve it, the black pearl necklace was already gone. He then started looking for it. In such a hurry to find the black pearl necklace, he did not notice the pretty little bag placed at the corner of a bench in the patio.

As he was searching for the black pearl necklace, he came upon a girl standing in the guest receiving room. Her back was turned to him and so when Sano asked who she was, he was surprised to find the black pearl necklace at the hands of the girl. It was not only that, he found the black pearl necklace dazzling sparkling at the hands of the girl, which had never happened before.

That is when he looked into the eyes of the girl and fell in love with her. The girl’s name was Keiko, who turned out to be the daughter of his trusted advisor. After many months of courtship, he proposed to her and she accepted it. Within a year, they got married and lived peacefully near the sea. Sano then thought that the black pearl necklace did bring enormous amount of luck in his life.
