The two-piece heart necklace is a popular style. It has been so for years. Of the many forms, the most ubiquitous I’ve seen is the simple silver heart engraved with platitudes or quotes like ‘All you need is love’, or ‘I love you’, or ‘Soul meets soul’. You can break one in half and give the other away. Every jewelry and trinket store I pass by has some of them.

Two-piece heart necklaces, also known as broken necklaces or split heart necklaces, have been most popular with the teenaged and younger crowd, the adolescent couples, the tweens and teens. They also have been a favorite pick for friendship mementos between close comrades.

The reason for the attractiveness of these items is in the instant bond that occurs in giving the other half to a special person. It seems we have managed to hold on to a piece of old folklore even in this technological age: the belief that two objects, having touched each other, continue to influence and react with one another at a distance even after they have been detached or disconnected. It’s one of the bases of sympathetic magic, called the law of contact.

Many two-piece necklaces are more intricate than the simple silver plate mentioned earlier. There are engraved gold hearts, broken open hearts and many others. There is the heart necklace shaped as a lock, with its partner the fitting key, also heart-shaped. There are also magnetic hearts, their halves held together by the forces of nature.

There are intertwined hearts that can break away into two as well.  They come in sterling silver or diamonds, they might contain meteorite dust or your DNA strands, and they may be carved or glass-blown.

Many styles of jewelry become well-known through media coverage. But to some people, split hearts are thought to be somewhat sentimental, so they don’t appear much on Western cinema if the actors are over fifteen.

In the East though, where the people are not afraid to be sappy if it’s to make a point, these split hearts are seen in a lot of romantic flicks, animated movies, even advertisements. Even without the media though, the two-piece heart necklace relies on its own merits: the feeling of bonding with someone close to you.

Whether you want a promise heart for your best friend or an elegant golden necklace for your wife, the two-piece heart necklace is always a good bet. So why not get one? Even magic has laws, as I’ve said above. And love is a kind of magic, after all.
