In the modern world, men’s wedding rings, are considered to be a fairly new but accepted convention, even if it was not traditionally worn in most places on the planet. Nowadays men’s jewelry such as stud earrings or diamond rings are nothing out of the ordinary. Men’s rings, however, have been worn for a wide variety of reasons throughout history ranging from signet rings to rings who signaled a political or social affiliation. Here is a short description of the different types of men’s
rings used throughout history.
Signet Rings. These rings are the most-well known rings worn by men. While they had a utilitarian purpose of being proof that a letter or other directive sent by courier was unopened, they also were considered to be symbolic of a ruler’s power. Originally these rings had a simple symbol although over the course of history they became ornate until they often had a coat of arms and became a valuable heirloom given to the eldest son of a family, which made him the most powerful person in a family
Membership Rings. Membership rings only became popular in the eighteenth century with the rise of fraternities and other brotherhood circles such as the Jesuits and Freemasons. These rings also served as signet rings, but they were mostly symbolic of membership and were to be worn to meetings as proof. In general, if the society was more secretive the men’s rings would not be worn in public.
Poesy Rings. These rings were worn both by men and women in seventeenth century England and France. These men’s rings were made of silver and had some sort of poetry or romantic note engraved on it. They later became popular all over Europe with the publication of Shakespeare’s works that mentioned them.
Military rings and other affiliation rings. These rings are modern inventions that have become popular over the last century. These men’s rings show affiliation to a specific group such as branch of the military, a high school or university. These rings often have the insignia of the institution or affiliation together with a year imprinted on it.
Men’s wedding bands. Men’s wedding bands only became popular during World War II when married men shipped off to war in Europe and the Far East as a symbol of commitment to their wives. Currently, these are the most popular type of men’s ring worn by men around the globe.
