When people think of precious metals, often the first thing they will picture in their minds is gold. For jewelry purposes, though, there is far more on offer than the yellow gold rings and bracelets.

And let’s face it, different people have different tastes – which is a good thing – so announcing that one particular type of precious metal ring is better than another – or is the best – is purely subjective.

Even with gold rings (and other gold jewelry), there are several things to consider. The first of these is purity – gold is measured in karats (often spelled carat outside North America), where 1 karat is one part in twenty-four. So 24 karat is pure 100% gold; not at all good for making jewelry, as it is far too soft. In America, the most popular jewelry made of yellow gold tends to be 14 karats.

But if you happen to be over in England, visiting London perhaps and looking for a gift, you will very likely be confronted with jewelry in either 9 or 18 karat gold. And if you are visiting India, you will find trinkets that are 22 karats. So arguably, if you have two gold rings in your hand, one of them 9 kt and the other 18 kt, but stylistically identical, you could say that the 18 kt one is the best; unless you can only afford the 9 kt one!

To complicate matters further, jewelers also sell white gold rings. These are made from  gold mixed with other metals, such as nickel or sometimes silver. They obviously have a lower gold purity than high grade yellow gold rings, but many people still prefer the silver-white color of a white gold ring – it’s just a matter of taste.

The truth, however, is that white gold describes metal of a wide range of colors, and the white that you see on this type of jewelry is actually rhodium plate!

So whether gold rings are the best precious metal ones to buy should not actually be the question; and with many other metals to choose from, including sterling silver, platinum, titanium, stainless steel, the real question should be: are gold rings the best ones for you?
